Benefits of Milk for Teens and Adults

The benefits of milk for health is no doubt. Not only good for bones, milk also gives a good effect for the heart. In a study conducted at a prominent university in the United States, it was found that teenagers who consume less than three servings of dairy products a day tend to develop metabolic syndrome.

This is inversely proportional to the fact found in Indonesia. Here people generally assume that milk is only for children. In fact, adolescents and adults also need it. For adolescents and adults, drinking milk regularly will benefit bone strength and health. This is because milk provides some of the daily nutritional needs such as calcium and vitamin D which are important for bone strength and active life as a “savings” of old age.

According to data from Nielsen Draft Data (non-projected) 2014, milk consumption in Indonesia only reached 12 liters per person per year. Referring to the data, Indonesia still lags far behind some other Southeast Asian countries, such as Malaysia (39 liters per year), Vietnam (20 liters per year), and Thailand (17 liters per year).

This condition is the reason Frisian Flag Indonesia (FFI) as a family nutrition partner to support the increase of milk consumption by launching a campaign titled It’s Time for Drinking Milk Now !. The campaign aims to socialize the goodness of milk and encourage Indonesian families to drink milk regularly.

Nutritionist and Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Food and Nutrition Experts (Food Nutrition) Prof Dr Hardinsyah MS said milk is one of the food sources of nutrients, both macro nutrients and micronutrients or vitamins.

“Milk provides a beneficial nutrient in every stage of human development after the exclusive breastfeeding stage. Milk consumption can help meet the needs of vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for growth and development, especially in children after exclusive breastfeeding, “said Hardinsyah.

What Hardinsyah said is understandable because a glass of fortified milk can meet up to 20 percent of the daily nutritional needs of children and adults, also contributes 180 kcal of energy. Surely this will be useful in supporting the daily activities of each family member.
