We are working with health partners to pilot arts and health projects as a stepping stone to developing a new area of activity for the county. Increasingly attention is being given to the value of the arts in enhancing job satisfaction and the well being of professional and family caregivers. Despite that fact, and despite the invested effort and growth of knowledge and understanding in each arena, it is interesting that we often still find ourselves struggling with the fundamentals” of art and health and their meaning in society.
Participatory arts programmes: Getting involved in the arts provides both social and creative outlets for people who are ill – either with physical health issues or mental health issues. It is important to note the value of different arts activities and events in everyday life, and the equivalent value in situations where health is compromised.
This pilot will feed into a brand new student-led Commission on the future of the NHS which has been commissioned by Simon Stevens, CEO of NHS England and is led by Anne Marie Rafferty and Jonathan Grant as Principle Investigators. The workshop will a) give an overview of current theory and practice in interdisciplinary research; b) provide examples from existing funded interdisciplinary research among the workshop organizers; c) provide a platform for researchers to present current or proposed research for which they are seeking potential partners; d) focus on perceived barriers and facilitators to interdisciplinary research across AHSS/STEM/Health Sciences; and e) develop a summary report and action plan.
