Most of you know me as an artist – probably as a mixed media collage artist who has the occasional gallery show, and has written a few children’s books. Brooklyn Arts Council supports and promotes artists and cultural groups living and working in Brooklyn. Studies indicate that arts integration also fosters less reliance on physical responses as a means of communication (Johnson, 2007). This award supports projects in the field of traditional arts commencing on or after 1 January 2017.
The 2013 National Arts Index revealed art spending made up just 0.28 percent of the government’s non-military budget in 2011, with local government spending also dropping by 21 percent over that time. I’m not going to comment on the reasons for the millage or its merits from an arts management perspective-please check out Diane Ragsdale’s excellent post for a round-up of commentary and some hard-hitting opinions about the big picture.
Teachers need to find a way to incorporate the arts into the classroom rather than rely on outside activities and Jacobs suggests teaching through the arts with a means of using the arts successfully and in a way that it is not just one more thing they must include in the curriculum (Jacobs, 1999, p. 4).
So it’s important that everyone can experience and take part in arts and cultural activities, whatever their social or economic background. Arts education requires highly skilled teachers to attain quality arts integration (Garvis, Pendergast, 2011). Increase racial equity inside arts organizations, with a special focus on large, well-established ones, to achieve more racially diverse staff, boards, audience, and programming.
No child should be left behind, and teaching through the arts will reinforce this idea. A thriving arts sector creates ripple effects” of beneﬁts throughout our community. In sum, the benefits of publicly supporting the arts go far beyond mere aesthetic appreciation.
