As a way to support requirements of the Arts Education for Workforce Development Act ( House Bill 10-1273 ) that was passed by the Colorado General Assembly in 2010, an Arts Education Implementation Task Force convened to support efforts to prepare students for a creative and competitive 21st century workforce. The Art Education program at Purdue University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. NCLB, enacted in 2001, included art as one of the ten core academic subjects of public education, a designation that qualified arts programs for an assortment of federal grants.

Literature students in the Arts Education Program can choose to concentrate on elementary school teaching or secondary school teaching in Literature. Students who choose visual art as their area of concentration have the option of enrolling in a concurrent BA/BEd in Visual Art, or a BA/BEd in Indigenous Visual Education.
