Children under 18 attended the free event that brought together musical artists from LA Opera, musicians from the USC Thornton School of Music’s Community Engagement Programs, the Colburn School Jumpstart Wind Ensemble, the LAMusArt Choir from the Los Angeles Music and Art School in East Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Heidi Swedberg and Friends, as well as musicians from the Inner City Youth Orchestra and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. But the truth is that arts integration elevates the role of the arts specialist in the school. Because of the current emphases on curriculum standards, the rigidness of students’ lessons deprives them of the best way of learning: through personal exploration and discovery.
This report presents a synthesis of the research on the contribution of arts education to learning. Highly Capable Services – NEW name (as of 2014) as umbrella name for these programs: Highly Capable Cohort (formerly APP), Spectrum and ALO (Advanced Learning Opportunities).
Over the course of the program, Harvard faculty and Ensemble members will present sessions designed to challenge participants to consider the role of passion in teaching and learning. High arts children scored higher on a figural creativity test (no statistics reported).
As educators, we need tools to connect students’ passions, and our own, to meaningful learning for the 21st century. The work of the centre engages with aspects of aesthetics, creativity, ethics and advocacy, and celebrates, as well as questions, learner identities and learning communities.
Schools with teams of teachers who are all using this approach have the strongest results, both in terms of student understanding and school-wide use of arts integration at appropriate times.
