The north west arts and health network is changing – flexing and evolving with the times – still with its feet firmly on the ground in the north of england, but responsive to the many international voices that get in touch. Many of these models are based on new findings in brain research and cognitive development, and they embrace a variety of approaches: using the arts as a learning tool (for example, musical notes to teach fractions); incorporating arts into other core classes (writing and performing a play about, say, slavery); creating a school environment rich in arts and culture (Mozart in the hallways every day) and hands-on arts instruction.
In 2001, the California Board of Education set standards at each grade level for what students should know and be able to do in music, visual arts, theater, and dance, but a statewide study in 2006, by SRI International , found that 89 percent of K-12 schools failed to offer a standards-based course of study in all four disciplines.
Grants are designed to enable LEAs and organizations with arts expertise to further create and develop materials for the replication or adaptation of current comprehensive approaches for integrating a range of arts disciplines-such as music, dance, theater, and visual arts, including folk arts-into the elementary and middle school curricula.
Composed of administrators responsible for music and arts programs in their school districts, the Arts Education Advisory Council (AEAC) meets five times each year to examine issues of particular relevance to music, art, dance, theatre arts and creative writing curricula.
Now with a clear mandate, and a focus on our culturally rich metropolitan area, there are real opportunities for him to celebrate what is happening at grass-roots level alongside the offer of our bigger cultural players, whilst investing in culture and the arts as social determinants of health and wellbeing, for long-term social change.
